American Colonization Society-An abolitionism group that founded the Republic of Liberia on the West African coast for former slaves.
Corrupt Bargain- The Presidential Election of 1824, called the corrupt bargain because the voting went all the way to the House of Representatives where the speaker, Henry Clay, chose John Quincy Adams as President in exchange for the position of Secretary of State.
Eli Whitney- The inventor of the cotton gin, which made the separation of cotton fibers from the seeds approximately 50 times more effective.
Great Western Frontiers - Originally the area west of the Mississippi, the Great Western Frontier had to be pushed back numerous times because of the rapid rate of expansion in 1800's America.
Grimke Sisters- Sarah and Angelina, they were a significant part of the early Women's Rights movement and huge anti-slavery proponents.
Henry Clay- The Speaker of the House of Representatives and a key part of the corrupt bargain, the Kentucky native also ran for President in the 1832 election, but was defeated by Jackson.
Indian Removal Act- Passed by Congress in 1830, the Act stated that all Indian tribes East of the Mississippi would be moved West.
Manifest Destiny-The belief of many Americans that it was their destiny to inhabit the entire area between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.
Mexican American War- The war between the U.S. and Mexico that started in 1846 and ended with an American victory that allowed them to annex the future states California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, and parts of Colorado and New Mexico.
Republican Motherhood- The idea that women were the keepers of the house, they were supposed to take care of their home, family, and supply the moral education for their children.
Seneca Falls- In New York, the site of the 1848 Woman's Rights Convention that publicly launched the women's rights movement.

Andrew Jackson's Bank Veto Message
http://www.let.rug.nl/usa/presidents/andrew-jackson/bankveto-message-1832.php When questions arose as to why Andrew Jackson vetoed the rechartering of the U.S. National Bank, he released this statement with his reasons for doing so. They include the facts that the bank held a monopoly on Government money, at least a quarter of it's shareholders were foreigners, and that throughout history the rich and powerful have bent the govenment to do their bidding. The significance of Jackson's bank closing is that it spread out Government funds and created "pet" banks. JM |

Declaration of Sentiments
http://www.fordham.edu/halsall/mod/senecafalls.asp This document was written at the 1848 Seneca Falls Women's Rights Convention-- which became a major landmark in women's rights. Along with declaring women's sentiments or the document being modeled after the declaration of independence, this document significantly established the idea that all men and women are created equal. It demanded equality in not only the workforce or home, but in the ballot box. This document and the convention had drastically launched the women's rights movement. JT |
Political CartoonThis pictures deals with the social standing of African Americans and the Irish immigrants. This symbolic scale shows they are equal and that is very serious because slaves were look at as inferior and three fifths human basically! To say the Irish are equal to slaves was very negative. As you can see at the top the black's scale says "south" and the Irish has "north". This implies an analogy. That the black are to south as the Irish are to the north. The pictures of the individuals is very ugly and look like monkeys which implies uncivilized people.
