Unit 5: The Gilded Age
Timeline
Trigger Words
Big Stick- Theodore Roosevelt's idea of negotiating to get what he wanted while simultaneously threatening with either military or economic action if he did not get what he wanted.
Compromise 1877- The unwritten deal in wich Rutherford B. Hayes won the presidency over Samuel J. Tilden because he agreed to end reconstruction in the South.
Dawes Act- A failed law that tried to assimilate Indians by giving them individual parcels of land, a theory that did not work because Indians were used to living on communal land, as in nobody owned it and everybody shared.
Gentlemen’s Agreement- A typically unwritten agreement between two parties- typically used in this time period by corporations to crate trusts and other agreements that were usually unfair to the common people.
Ghost Dance- A religious movement that swept the Native American nation in response to the war the US government had made on Indians. The actual dance was believed to reunite the living and the dead.
Haymarket Square- Part of the May Day strikes in which a bomb was set off by anarchists but a major union, the Knights of Labor, was blamed and eventually dissolved.
Homestead Strike- A massive strike of Carnegie Steel coal workers in Pennsylvania that was crushed by a private security company, the Pinkertons. Even though the Pinkertons were defeated, the strike was defeated and it was a major setback for workers rights.
Interstate Commerce Act- An act passed by congress that stated that any meat shipped across state lines had to be inspected by the federal government.
NAACP- The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People was organized in 1909 to help fight for black equality in social, economic, and racial equality.
Panic 1873- A very long economic downturn that was caused by the fall of the value of silver worldwide.
Pendleton Act- This act forced people to take an exam if they wanted to apply for a federal job, largely eliminating the ability to fire or hire someone for porely political reasons.
Plessy v. Ferguson- The Supreme Court decision in which the court upheld the constitutionality of "separate but equal" segregation.
Spanish American War- A war between Spain and America caused largely by America's intervention in Cuba's war for independence (in America's view the "bombing " of the USS Maine) in which America won and took possession of both Cuba and the Philippines.

Annexation of the Hawaiian Islands
http://www.bartleby.com/43/44.html This document states states that the reason the U.S. annexed the Hawaiian Islands was because Queen Lilioukalani tried to gain more power in the islands, but failed. The peaceful annexation included the giving of citizenship rights to Hawaiian residents, the U.S. assumption of Hawaiian debt, the appointment of commissioners to recommend to congress legislation regarding Hawaii, and the outlawing of Chinese immigrants to Hawaii and from Hawaii to the U.S. The significance of this document is that it shows that when America annexed Hawaii as territory, Hawaii instantly gained the laws and social issues of America. It also shows that the U.S. was serious about the ban on Chinese immigrants into the U.S. JM |
Muller vs. State of Oregon
http://caselaw.lp.findlaw.com/scripts/getcase.pl?court=us&vol=208&invol=412 In Muller vs. Oregon, the Supreme Court ruled that defendant Curt Muller and his superintendents had created a law in the state of Oregon that limited the hours women worked to 10 hours. Mrs. Gotcher, angry at the law being infracted, reported the incident. Muller was fined for $10 and at an attempt to take the case to the supreme court, he failed and had to still pay the $10 fine. This document is significant because after fighting for equal rights for so long, a case ruled in favor of women. The issue was blurred behind slavery and they were finally getting close to being heard. An achievement in the rights of women occurred when the 18th amendment was incorporated in 1919. JT |
