3/5 Compromise-A compromise between the northern and southern states during the Philadelphia convention of 1787 in which it was determined that a slave would count for 3/5 of a person for representation means.
Alien & Sedition Acts- Four separate bills passed in 1798 and signed by President John Adams which extended the duration of residence needed to become a citizen to 14 years, gave the President the power to deport aliens deemed "dangerous" or whose home countries were at war with the U.S., and made it a crime to publish malicious writings about the government.
American System- Stimulated manufacturing and demand for resources; drafted by Henry Clay; was designed to enforce western tariffs in return for aid in railroad and canal construction from the east.

Land Ordinance- The Land Ordinance was enacted in 1785 as a way for the federal government, under the Articles of Confederation, to make money. It called for the repossession and subsequent sale of all land west of the Appalachians belonging to the states to get the Government out of the debt left over from the Revolutionary War.
Louisiana Purchase- The acquisition of the current state of Louisiana and some 800,000 square miles to the west from France in 1803. Thought unconstitutional by some, the total sum for the land bought was 15 million dollars, less than 3 cents per acre.
Marbury v. Madison- Landmark Supreme Court case in which Chief Justice John Marshall established that only the Supreme Court had the power to determine what is and is not constitutional.
McCulloch v. Maryland- in this case, 1819, supreme court ruled that the second bank of the united states was constitutional under implied powers and because it was a federal agency it could not be taxed.
Missouri Compromise- dispute over Missouri entering the union as a slave state in 1820; ending in Missouri entering as a slave state, however Maine entering as a free state; soon after this compromise the 36' 30 line was established.
Northwest Ordinance- Passed in 1787, the Northwest Ordinance created the Northwest Territory, the first official U.S. territory outside of the original 13 colonies, and prohibited slavery in the states the NW Territory was to become.
Revolution of 1800- The Presidential Election of 1800, in which Thomas Jefferson defeated John Adams.
Shays' Rebellion- Rebellion by Revolutionary War veterans, led by Capt. Daniel Shays, who were furious at the impending foreclosure of their farms and slow economic times in general.
Virginia & Kentucky Resolutions- Political statements in which Kentucky and Virginia claimed that the Alien and Sedition Acts were unconstitutional.
War of 1812- A war between the U.S. and Great Britain from 1812 to 1815, in which the U.S. was badly beaten and the White house burned.
Whiskey Rebellion- A protest on a tax for whiskey, which many farmers converted their grain into for transportation purposes.

It shows the arguments of both the plaintiff and the defendant as well as the reasoning behind the Supreme Court's ruling. Thomas Jefferson's Inaugural Speech

In his speech he introduces his plans for industry, with the idea of protecting private business with better tariff's; reforms in government, involving the introduction of new tax regulations and enforcement; and the difficulties involving the U.S.'s expansion West, Manifest Destiny. This picture pertains specifically to the second bill in The Alien and Sedition acts, which is the "Alien act". The significance lies in the federalists' cruelty in their acts and this especially shows that mys showing a small evil man who thinks of the foreigners as dirty and flocking like animals. RG |
